J. Willard Gibbs, in full Josiah Willard Gibbs, born February 11, 1839, in New Haven, Connecticut, U.S., And died April 28, 1903, in New Haven. Josiah Willard Gibbs’s Father Josiah Willard Gibbs Sr., and his Mother Mary Anna. He was an American mathematician and physicist who made important contributions to the fields of physics, chemistry, and mathematics.
He is best known for his work on thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, and vector calculus. Gibbs was born in New Haven, Connecticut, and received his bachelor‘s degree from Yale in 1858. He then went on to study at the Sheffield Scientific School at Yale, where he received his doctorate in 1863. After completing his studies, Gibbs worked as a professor at Yale and the University of Pennsylvania. He became a professor at Yale in 1871 and held the position until he died in 1903.
Gibbs made several notable contributions to the fields of physics, chemistry, and mathematics. He is often referred to as the “Father of Modern Thermodynamics“ for his work on the subject, which laid the groundwork for the development of statistical mechanics. He also developed the mathematical system of vector calculus, which is essential to modern physics. Gibbs‘ most famous work is On the Equilibrium of Heterogeneous Substances, which laid the foundation for chemical thermodynamics.
