Quote: The essence of mathematics lies in its freedom ( Georg Cantor )

Georg Cantor’s full name was Georg Ferdinand Ludwig Philipp Cantor. He was born on March 3, 1845, in  St. Petersburg, Russia. And he died on January 6, 191,8 in  Halle, Germany, George Cantor’s father is Danish. He was a prosperous merchant. And his mother Maria Anna Böhm. When his father became ill in 1856, the family moved to Frankfurt. Cantor’s mathematical talents emerged before his 15th birthday while he was studying in private schools and at a gymnasium at Darmstadt first and then at Wiesbaden.

Georg Cantor is a Russian-born mathematician.  He is considered the founder of set theory.  And introduced the concept of infinite numbers with his discovery of cardinal numbers. He also advanced the study of trigonometric series. He was able to establish the importance of one-to-one correspondence between members of two sets, well-ordered sets, and defined infinite sets. These proved that real numbers are much more numerous than natural numbers. His theorem implies the existence of an ‘infinity of infinities.’ Georg also defined the ordinal and cardinal numbers and their arithmetic.

Contribution to Mathematics

In 1865, he became the first president of the Deutsche Mathematiker-Vereinigung society, and in 1868, he joined the Schellbach seminar for mathematics. He also worked on number theory and analysis. In Halle, he decided to probe further into trigonometry and even started pondering over the uniqueness of the representation of a function of trigonometric series. By 1873, Georg proved that rational numbers were countable and could also be placed in correspondence to natural numbers.
